South Africa: Malay Cooking Class in Bo-Kaap

While vacation is usually a time away from the kitchen we decided to take a cooking class in the Bo-Kaap district.  Bo-Kaap is an area with colorful homes and we were lucky to enter one to learn about the local foods, traditions, and make a wonderful lunch.  Before we started cooking, the instructor walked us through the neighborhood.  The tour took us into the local spice and butcher shops and provided a history of the area.  I was interested to see the mixture of cultures across time. After the tour, we went into the instructor’s home to start chopping, mixing, frying, and sautéing. As the ‘newly-weds’ the instructor pulled me and Emily from the crowd to demonstrate how to cook everything.  Let’s just say it will be a while before I have my own cooking show.
